GEO: Make AI Cite Your Brand, Not Your Competitors

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means getting ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude to cite your website as a source. At Kiwop it starts at €1,500/month: every week we measure across 6 engines whether AI cites you and how much traffic it sends you, without promising deadlines.

What's Included in the GEO Service?

Everything you need so generative engines cite your brand.

  • GEO Audit: citability analysis across 6 AI engines
  • Citation Engineering: content optimized for citability

Why

SEO Ranks You on Google. GEO Ranks You in AI.

They're complementary, not substitutes.

Traditional SEO optimizes for blue link rankings. GEO optimizes so that AI cites you as an authoritative source when users ask questions. Websites with strong SEO are more likely to be cited by AI, which is why GEO builds on solid SEO. The difference: in GEO, content needs to be citable, verifiable and structured by entities, not just keyword-relevant.

Definition

What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques for optimizing web content so that generative search engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Copilot) cite your brand as an authoritative source in their responses. Unlike traditional SEO, GEO focuses on citability, verifiability and semantic entity structure.

According to a study by Aggarwal et al. (Princeton and IIT Delhi, KDD 2024), GEO techniques increase visibility in AI responses by up to 40%. The GEO market will reach $7.3 billion by 2031 (34% CAGR, Valuates Reports, 2025). McKinsey (2025) estimates that 50% of consumers already use AI search, and 44% of those users call it their primary source of insight. GEO doesn't replace SEO: it complements it. Websites with strong organic rankings are more likely to be cited by AI models. The key: content with verifiable data, entity-connected Schema.org, pages that AI search crawlers can read, and presence in sources LLMs consult.

Summary

Executive Summary

For CEOs and marketing directors.

$750 billion in US revenue will flow through AI search by 2028 (McKinsey, 2025). 50% of consumers already use generative engines to research purchases (McKinsey, 2025). Yet only 16% of brands measure their AI engine visibility (McKinsey, 2025). Measuring it is the first step to improving it.

GEO is the natural evolution of SEO: it doesn't replace it, it amplifies it. Kiwop applies Citation Engineering, entity positioning and weekly monitoring across 6 generative engines to make your brand the source AI recommends. Brands cited in AI Overviews see 35% more organic clicks and 91% more ad clicks (Seer Interactive, 2025). Investing in GEO protects and multiplies your existing SEO asset.

  • $750B US Revenue Flowing Through AI Search by 2028 (McKinsey, 2025)
  • +35% More Organic Clicks for AI-Cited Brands (Seer Interactive, 2025)
  • +40% AI Visibility with GEO Techniques (Aggarwal et al., Princeton and IIT Delhi, KDD 2024)

For the CTO

Summary for CTO / Technical Team

Technical requirements and integration.

GEO requires a solid technical foundation: SSR/SSG mandatory so AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, and Googlebot for AI Overviews) can read the content. Entity-structured Schema.org (Organization, Service, FAQ, HowTo, Dataset) with explicit semantic relationships. A robots.txt that lets AI search crawlers in; GPTBot, which trains models, is a separate decision.

Monitoring stack: Otterly.AI and Profound for citation tracking, HubSpot AEO Grader for content auditing, Ahrefs Brand Radar for mentions. Integration with GA4 + CRM to measure conversions from AI traffic, identified by referrer and by utm_source. Technical changes can be implemented by your team or ours.

Who it is for

Is GEO Right for Your Business?

GEO is an advanced service that requires an existing SEO foundation. Check if you're a fit.

Who it's for

  • Companies already investing in SEO that want to protect their visibility as AI search advances.
  • E-commerce businesses detecting organic traffic loss from AI Overviews and zero-click searches.
  • B2B SaaS where buyers research solutions by asking ChatGPT or Perplexity.
  • Agencies and consultancies that need to appear as the go-to reference when an LLM recommends providers.
  • Brands that see competitors being cited in AI responses and want to reclaim that visibility.

Who it's not for

  • Companies without a website or prior digital presence (you need an SEO foundation first).
  • Businesses without original content or the capacity to create it: GEO needs citable content.
  • If you want a guaranteed timeline for citations: nobody can promise one. GEO is sustained, measured work.
  • Purely offline businesses with no interest in digital presence.
  • Organizations without budget for sustained investment (minimum 6 months).

Key points

The 5 Pillars of the GEO Service

Each pillar targets a visibility vector in generative engines.

  1. 01

    GEO Audit

We analyze your current presence across 6 AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, AI Overviews). We identify which questions about your industry AI answers, who gets cited, and where you have citability gaps versus your competitors.

  2. 02

    Citation Engineering

We restructure your content to maximize citation probability. This includes: verifiable data with sources, direct question-and-answer formats, up-to-date statistics, and semantic structure that LLMs prioritize as reliable sources.

  3. 03

    Entity & Brand Positioning

We strengthen your entity graph in Knowledge Graph, Wikidata, and reference sources that feed LLMs. Schema.org with explicit semantic relationships (sameAs, knowsAbout, hasCredential). The goal: make models identify you as the authority in your niche.

  4. 04

    Technical GEO

robots.txt optimization for AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot), advanced Schema.org (Dataset, HowTo, FAQ with nested structure), SSR/SSG for full rendering, and preparation for agentic browsing (the category Google measures in Lighthouse since May 2026). Our standard is public: kiwop.com is ready for agents, with forms and WebMCP tools in production. llms.txt? We keep it short and correct, but it is not the lever.

  5. 05

    AI Visibility Monitoring

Weekly dashboard with evolution of citations, mentions and recommendations of your brand in each generative engine. Tracking of key prompts in your industry. Visibility change alerts. Measurement of traffic and conversions from AI engines, by referrer and by utm_source.

How we work

Risks and how we cover them

Risks and Mitigation

Transparency about what can go wrong and how we manage it.

  1. 01

    AI search is constantly evolving

    Mitigation

We monitor 6 engines weekly. Our team analyzes every update from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. We adapt strategy in 2-week cycles, not quarterly.

  2. 02

No standardized metrics for GEO yet

    Mitigation

We use specialized tools (Otterly.AI, Profound, Scrunch AI) combined with GA4 to measure citations, mentions and AI traffic (by referrer and by utm_source). We define business KPIs from day one.

  3. 03

    Results depend on SEO foundation

    Mitigation

Websites with strong SEO are more likely to be cited by AI. If your technical foundation needs work, we identify it in the audit and prioritize it before advanced GEO.

  4. 04

    Competitors may react quickly

    Mitigation

Only 16% of brands track their AI search visibility (McKinsey, 2025). Authority in third-party sources takes time to build, so starting earlier matters.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About GEO

What decision-makers ask before investing in AI visibility.

What's the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO optimizes for link rankings on Google. GEO optimizes so AI engines (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews) cite your brand as an authoritative source in their responses. SEO focuses on keywords and domain authority; GEO focuses on citability, verifiability and entity positioning. They're complementary: strong SEO is the foundation of GEO.

How long until we see GEO results?

Technical improvements (Schema.org, AI search crawler access, SSR): 2-4 weeks. Citations are a different matter: we work to get AI to cite you and measure every week whether it does. We don't promise a fixed timeline: it depends on the engine, your sector and what is already published about you. AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) revisit pages at varying frequencies.

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT's answers?

No. Since August 2026 there are ads in ChatGPT in Europe, but they appear below the answer, labelled as sponsored, and according to OpenAI they do not influence what ChatGPT answers. Getting cited in the answer is still organic work, which is what GEO does. How the ads work and when they pay off, in ChatGPT ads.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO complements and amplifies SEO. Websites with strong organic rankings are more likely to be cited by AI models. Without a solid SEO foundation, GEO has limited reach. That's why we recommend maintaining both strategies in parallel.

Which AI engines does Kiwop monitor?

We monitor 6 generative engines: ChatGPT (OpenAI), Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini (Google), Claude (Anthropic) and Microsoft Copilot. Each engine has its own sources and citation criteria, so the strategy adapts to each one.

How do you measure ROI for GEO?

We measure three levels: (1) visibility: frequency and position of your brand citations in AI responses, (2) traffic: visits from AI engines, identified by referrer and by utm_source (8 in 10 visits from ChatGPT arrive without a referrer, tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com), (3) conversions: leads and sales generated by AI traffic. For Google, since 31 August 2026 Search Console shows your pages' impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (the "Generative AI performance" report, without clicks). How to isolate that traffic in GA4: how to track ChatGPT traffic.

What is Citation Engineering?

Citation Engineering is the discipline of restructuring content to maximize the probability of being cited by LLMs. It includes: writing with verifiable data and sources, question-and-answer formats that models prioritize, up-to-date statistics, and semantic entity structure. According to Aggarwal et al. (Princeton and IIT Delhi, KDD 2024), these techniques increase AI visibility by up to 40%. We apply it step by step in how to get cited by ChatGPT.

Does my website need technical changes for GEO?

It depends on your current stack. Key requirements are: SSR or SSG (no client-only rendering), entity-structured Schema.org, and access enabled in robots.txt for AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot). GPTBot trains models: whether to block it is a separate decision. If your website already has strong technical SEO, the changes are incremental.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

llms.txt is a 2024 proposal (a text file at your site root that summarises its content for AI models). It is cheap to add and we have one, but it is not what gets you cited by ChatGPT: in 15 days, none of the 93 requests to our llms.txt came from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or Perplexity crawlers, while ChatGPT's search crawler read 328 regular pages. What matters is that your pages get read and answer with data. The numbers are in does llms.txt work?

What is Agentic Browsing and how does Kiwop approach it?

Agentic Browsing is the Lighthouse category (since version 13.3, May 2026) that measures whether AI agents can use a website: agent-oriented accessibility, layout stability, llms.txt and WebMCP. It appears in PageSpeed Insights alongside Performance, Accessibility and SEO. kiwop.com is ready for agents: forms and WebMCP tools in production. We apply the same standard to our clients' websites. Want to know how yours scores? Start with our free Agentic Browsing test.

Does GEO work for B2B?

Especially well for B2B. B2B buyers already use ChatGPT and Perplexity to research solutions, compare providers and validate options. According to McKinsey (2025), 44% of AI search users call it their primary source of insight. In B2B with long sales cycles, being cited as a reference during the research phase carries a lot of weight in the pipeline.

How often are GEO strategies updated?

2-week iteration cycles. AI engines evolve fast: new models, changes in citation criteria, AI Overviews updates. We monitor weekly and adjust strategy every 2 weeks. Full monthly reports with business metrics.

How much does the GEO service cost?

Kiwop's GEO service starts at €1,500/month (~$1,600/month). The final price depends on the number of markets and languages, your site's technical maturity and how competitive your sector is, and is set at the kick-off meeting. It includes monitoring of the 6 generative engines, 2-week iteration cycles and a monthly report with business metrics. If you're sizing up a broader AI investment, we have a guide on how much an AI project costs.
